A while ago I was playing Warcraft 3, and the damn game kept crashing after about an hour of play. Eventually I traced the cause to my cpu being about 59ºC under full load, because there was so much dirt and crap in the heatsink it wasnt able to cool properly anymore. After giving it a good bath, my temperatures dropped a whole 10ºC and the game stopped crashing. If this doesn’t convince you that dust in your system screws things up bigtime, nothing will.
So anyways, here is what I did to stop so much dust getting inside my machine in future…

Too lazy to make a trip all the way to home depot for that wire screen stuff that you usually use to filter dust/firewall mosquitos? Me too. It probably costs too much too and still isnt fine enough to stop much. So here is what I used: Bounce fabric softener sheets. They are cheap, you can get them in any S-Mart, and just 1 sheet is enough to stop the dirt coming in 3 fanholes. Pikachu is in the picture because I like pikachu.

So yeah, cut up a sheet of the stuff 80mm square or however big your air intake hole is. Then stick it on tightly against it. Fabric softener sheets have a great bonus – everyone knows that bsods are caused by your ram farting because they have eaten too much dirt. So increase system stability by making things smell better in your computer!

For a day or 2, the circulating air blowing through the sheet made my computer desk area smell pretty nice. Yay. And here is what it looked like after 2 weeks worth of dirt and crap had been caught:

Mientras perdía algo de tiempo navegando por internet me he encontrado con una variante para poder aprovechar un disco duro viejo.

Sólo he encontrado esta imagen, sin nada más. Así que os digo como yo lo haría.

Seria tan sencillo desmontas el disco duro, sacar el brazo e imanes. Sacar el disco superior y usarlo como plantilla para cortar un trozo de papel de lija.
Antes de volver a montar tendríamos que poner cinta adhesiva de doble cara para que al hacer girar el disco la lija no sea expulsada por la fuerza centrifuga que ejerce, recordad que es un trozo de papel.

Ya sólo nos quedaría sacar el cable del ordenador para poder conectarlo.
Seria aconsejable sujetar en una base el disco duro con la lija para evitar vibraciones y llevarnos así un susto. Si queréis poner un interruptor lo mejor seria poner uno doble en los cables rojo y amarillo.
